iPhone 13 Pro Max – A Creative’s Review

Amazing new cameras and a seamless user experience, this review explores why I enjoy so much the new iPhone 13 Max from a creative’s point of view and how it restarted my passion for photography.

Changing my phone was not in my plans. I was very happy with my iPhone 12, its size was great, not too bulky or small, I could read fine but my eyes were starting to get tired at the end of the day.

At the same time since I had the 32GB version I was starting to run out of space and since I started to spend more and more time obsessing like a degenerate with crypto and NFT I was hooked, and definitely needed an upgrade.

I wanted to a mobile hub for managing my ever growing TikTok, Instagram and Twitter usage with precision and ease. Since I was trying to promote my NFTs and needed to constantly stay on top of things.

I was not expecting the switch to be so dramatic.

On the outside, sure, my wife has the 12 Pro max and it looks almost exactly the same, a bit smaller notch but nothing radical. But jumping from the normal 12 version, it was like really like holding a completely new device.

The details is what makes this phone so special. And for the past month and my crypto addiction just getting worse and worse I have to say that it’s very hard to put the damn thing down.

It’s fast. The A15 Bionic chip with an all new 5-core GPU, new CPU performance and efficiency cores, superfast neural engine enables Cinematic mode, Smart HDR 4 and advanced ISP improving noise reduction and tone mapping.

The experience with the 120hz screen is phenomenal, even now as I type this from a M1 MacBook Air, the contrast is very noticeable. I like to read and enjoy the real estate, and it’s quite useful for that, even though I was expecting a bit more of a replacement to my Kindle, or iPad it’s still a phone experience and it’s a heavy piece of tech, especially if you add a leather case.

Battery life is fantastic. I almost forget to charge it and i’m not constantly worrying about running out of battery. I’ve had situation where I left the house during the day and was heavily using the GPS to explore the city and checking crypto like a degenerate, streaming video podcasts, and browsing instagram and all was fine in the world.

What the iPhone 13 Pro Max does is that you forget about the phone and you can just focus swiftly in the user experience. It becomes a window to your digital world. It’s super fast, you can multitask with ease, the display gives that extra little bit of delight.

The new cameras are amazing, period. The 3 lenses are incredible, specially the longer 3x one.

Ultra Wide

  • 13 mm focal length
  • ƒ/1.8 aperture

  • 26 mm focal length
  • 1.9 μm pixels
  • ƒ/1.5 aperture

  • 77 mm focal length
  • 3x optical zoom
  • ƒ/2.8 aperture

There is also a macro feature that lets you get unbelievably close to objects.

The new macro feature give you access to impressive closeups.

Combined with more storage, I have found again passion for iPhone photography. The image quality is fantastic. Sometimes you can really notice all the post AI-ML processing but regardless the quality of the photos is just incredible. There is so much technology behind every photo and you can tell that the photo experience will only get better and better. It’s a very sophisticated blend of hardware & software working perfectly together. You can really tell Apple’s engineering team has put a lot of time and effort in bringing this product to life.

Where for me it brings the most fun is doing night photography (specially in winter!).

The phone is heavy, and I purchased a Sequoia Green leather case and the iPhone Leather Wallet in Midnight color (yes i’m a disgusting apple fanboy but I hope my crypto addiction pays off and I can forever live purchasing their latests gadgets). BTW. Non-sponsored links.

Apple’s original cases are designed to minimize the load and provide some classy protection. And the wallet is pretty cool even though I’m not used to carrying only 2 cards. But I’m forcing myself to try to live with less things.

My personal iPhone 13 Pro Max setup with the green leather case and the black Apple Wallet.

There is a big difference on using an iPhone 13 and a Pro Max. This phone gives you an edge if you are a creative. It provides a lot of value with the new camera sensors and if you are not a crypto degenerate such as myself, you can actually use it as a tool for creative productivity.

iOS 15 works great and takes advantage of every hardware feature to give those little 1% increases in everything you do.

You can run photo and video editing apps to create a lot of content for social media with great speed. I think the biggest transition is that you are holding a small and very powerful computer that does phone calls and can become a creativity hub with a battery life that will last for a whole day with heavy use.

I still want to take my time testing all the new video features, really excited about shooting directly in ProRes or Dolby Vision.
